Instagram News Feed Redesign

Cognitive Design and Project Management

Overview

Once just a photo-sharing app, Instagram has evolved into a platform on which many users between the ages of 18-30 receive news information. This redesign of the Instagram platform aimed to combat the spread of misinformation through the social media application. Once we identified that users on Instagram did not have convenient access to reliable information or sources, our team went through all stages of the design process to find a solution.

Our final design report, presentation, and a demo of the experience are shown here.

A detailed case study breakdown is coming soon.

Design Report

The design problem that we tackled in our project is the inaccessibility for users to fact check the information on Instagram or view news reports from multiple perspectives, compounded with Instagram’s lack of news media-specific structure.

There is currently no convenient or direct-to-action way to compare and cross-check information about a news topic. Users generally use Instagram to gather quick information, and stopping to exit out from the app and search for source information is not conducive to this process. This design discourages users from viewing information from a critical stance or evaluating its credibility. Additionally, the engagement-based algorithm results in users only seeing information biased to one side of the political spectrum (as opposed to varied perspectives). This inaccessibility to multiple opinions about an issue can fuel misinformation spread.
